Dentists specialize in prevention, treatment , and diagnosis of diseases that occur in the face, mouth, jaw, and neck. Oral surgeons or maxillofacial surgeons, these dentists specialize in the treatment and diagnosis of conditions or injuries of the mouth,jaw,teeth, gums,and face. Such conditions as facial trauma,cancer, and brith defects are some of the procedures they can perform. Along with the 4 years of dental school, these dentists must also complete another 8 years of schooling in order to practice this type of dentistry, and then another 4 years of a surgical residency.

Dentists called orthodontists give treatment and diagnose patients with dental irregularities. The services and treatment include over/under bites, jaw alignments, and misaligned teeth. Treatments that are most often used are braces, invisalign(a type of braces), and retainers,all depending on the patients condition. Orthodontists are also required to take the 4 years of dental school, and then another 2-3 years of a residency program.

Family dentists may be the most common of dentists as they treat a variety of conditions and the patients range from children to the elderly. Some family dentists will work in other added specialties such as cosmetic dentistry, and others, depending on personal preference and training. Most patients visit family dentists twice a year for cleanings, or more often if the dental condition is worse.
