Hard drive shortages hit Intel earnings Electronics News

INTEL has revised its fourth-quarter revenue to below expectations, citing hard disk drive supply shortages due to the floods in Thailand.

“The company now expects fourth-quarter revenue to be US$13.7 billion, plus or minus $300 million, on both a GAAP and non-GAAP basis, lower than the previous expectation of $14.7 billion, plus or minus $500 million,” the announcement stated.

Intel says PC sales will be up for the fourth quarter of 2011, but the hard disk drive shortage situation is having a negative impact on the global PC supply chain, with effects passed on to microprocessor sales.

Intel expects hard disk drive supply shortages to continue into the first quarter, followed by a rebuilding of microprocessor inventories as supplies of hard disk drives recover during the first half of 2012.

This indication from Intel agrees with an IHS iSuppli forecast, which stated that the hard disk drive shortages will result in a 3.8 million-unit shortfall in PC shipments in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the previous IHS forecast issued in August.

While the supply chain has enough inventory of hard drives for the rest of 2011, this is expected to run out in 2012, impacting PC production.
